world cup 1958 history

Source : http://www.worldcup.isn.pl

The privilege of hosting the tournament was given to Sweden, which withdrew in 1954, giving way to Switzerland. Argentina joined the competition after a long break, not having been in the finals since 1938. For the first time the USSR team entered the competition. There was already a surprise in the qualifiers: the elimination of two-time world champions from the first 4 tournaments, Uruguay and Italy. The Welsh team, after some bad performance in the qualifiers was selected opponent for Israel, which was boycotted in its qualifiers zone, and made the finals (beating Israel 2:0).

Before launching the VI World Cup, the first round was modified. Dividing the teams into weaker and stronger ones was exchanged for group games played "everyone against everyone". The favourites were the Brazilians and the English, but the latter didn't make it past the first round after losing to USSR 0:1 in an additional game. There were no surprises in the quarterfinals - the winners were the teams that did best in the group games. The semis were played between teams from Brazil, France, Sweden and West Germany. France gave Brazil a hard time only in the first half and in second half completely lost initiative. The other game the home team beat defending champion, West Germany. In the final Sweden was no match for the "canarinhos" and lost 2:5. The Rimet Cup went to Brazil for the first time in history. France won 3. place, defeating West Germany 6:3.

Top players of the tournament: Didi, Garrincha, Pelé, N. Santos (Brazil), Fontaine, Kopa (France), Liedholm, Skoglund (Sweden), Rahn (West Germany), Blanchflower (Northern Ireland), Jaszyn (USSR).

world cup 1954 history

The anniversary tournament in 1954 was to take place in Switzerland to celebrate the 50th anniversary of FIFA, which had headquarters in Zurich since 1932. 36 national teams took part in the World Cup qualifiers and 16 made the finals. Sweden and Spain, 1950's finalists surprisingly didn't make it this time. Argentina, the World Cup boycotter didn't show up again, and neither did the strong USSR team. First time participants were teams from Korea Republic, Scotland and Turkey (the last two teams chose not to participate in the previous competition).

The rules of the tournament changed again: the first round was played in groups, but in a new way: each group was made up of two seeded and two drawn teams, and they were to play "weaker with stronger". The stronger teams were Uruguay, Hungary, Austria, England, Italy, France, Turkey, and Brazil. A revelation of the games was the West Germany team, that wasn't given any chance for getting out of the group after a loss to Hungary. West Germany got better and better with each match: they crushed Turkey twice (4:1 and 7:1) and defeated Yugoslavia and Austria to face favoured Hungary once again in the finals. The Hungarian team made the final game after heated matches with Brazil and Uruguay (both games 4:2 wins). In the last game of the competition Hungary dominated as expected, but for most of the game the score was tied. The decisive goal came suddenly after a counterattack of the German team and gave West Germany the Rimet Cup. Austria was the 3. place winner.

Top players of the tournament: Ocwirk (Austria), D. Santos, Bauer, Julinho (Brazil), Bozsik, Czibor, Hidegkuti, Kocsis, Puskás (Hungary), Turek, Rahn, F. Walter (West Germany), Varela, Schiaffino (Uruguay).

World cup 1950 history

Source : http://www.worldcup.isn.pl

The first World Cup after the war was played in Brazil in 1950. European teams from countries most affected by World War II (among others the Polish team) didn't enter the qualifiers. The silver medallists of the previous championships, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Argentina didn't participate either. For the first time teams from England and Scotland entered the competition and Uruguay, the world champion of 1930, entered after 20 years of absence. Eventually 13 out of 16 entered teams played in the tournament, after India, Scotland and Turkey had withdrawn from the competition after the draw. Under these circumstances, FIFA invited France and Portugal to play, but both countries rejected the offer.

There were no play-offs in the tournament, all games were played in groups. Most surprisingly, favoured England lost to USA and Spain (both games 0:1), which eliminated the pretender to the cup in the preliminary phase of the games. The team from Yugoslavia didn't get past the first round either, despite two victories. Spain, Sweden, Brazil and Uruguay made the finals, but in this stage only the South American teams counted. "Canarinhos" defeated Sweden 7:1 and Spain 6:1 and the game for the gold was to be played with Uruguay. Surprisingly, Uruguay was better and won the World Cup again, after 20 years. The 3. place went to Sweden.

Top players of the tournament: Ademir, Bauer, Chico, Zizinho (Brazil), Basora (Spain), Ghiggia, Máspoli, Schiaffino, Varela (Uruguay), Mitiæ (Yugoslavia).

world cup 1938 history

Source : http://www.worldcup.isn.pl

The World Cup championship played in France was the last one before World War II and turned out to be the least attended to. Once again the teams of the British Isles and Uruguay didn't enter the qualifiers, Argentina backed out of the competition after the draw, and Austria didn't participate because of its political situation. The team from Yugoslavia that had won the bronze at the championship of 1930 didn't qualify in 1938. The defending champion (Italy) and the hosting team (France) were automatically entered in the competition without a need to participate in the qualifiers. In all, 15 out of 16 qualified teams showed up in France.

The World Cup in France was played in the play-off system. In the first round, after a fierce match and additional time Poland, a first-time player in the cup, lost to Brazil 5:6. In the second phase Brazil put up a fight with Czechoslovakia and won the game, only to lose to Italy, the defending champion, in the semi-finals. Even though the German team was strengthened by Austrian players, it failed to defeat Switzerland. The Hungarians did well, beating strong teams from Switzerland and Sweden on its way to the final game. They were then easily defeated by the favourite team from Italy. The Italians won for the second time and defended their title as World Cup champion. The Brazilian team won 3. place after a 3:1 victory over Sweden.

Top players of the tournament: Domingos, Leônidas, Martim (Brazil), Plánicka (Czechoslovakia), Aston (France), Sárosi (Hungary), Andreolo, Meazza, Piola, (Italy), Wilimowski (Poland).

More national teams entered the competition that took place in Italy that year than in 1930, so for the first time qualifiers were organized. The big absentee was the team from Uruguay, which didn't intend to participate in the cup. The official reason was financial problems, but there were rumours about this being a way of getting back at the major European teams for not participating in the competition in 1930. Once again the British Isles didn't show interest in the games organized by FIFA. The team from Argentina arrived in substitute squad to protest against Italians, who had acquired three of Argentina's top players of Italian descent.

The competition in Italy was organized as play-offs (without groups). European teams dominated after they eliminated teams from Argentina, Brazil, Egypt and USA in the first round. The games in the second round were more equalized (all the games were won by one goal). The quarterfinal game between teams from Italy and Spain was dramatic and the referees handed the victory to the "squadra azzurra". In the semi-final Italians defeated Austria 1:0, not without trouble, and Czechoslovakia beat Germany. 45,000 people attended the final match. The Italian team won in extended time, even though 10 minutes before the end of the game they were loosing 0:1. Germany defeated Austria 3:2 in the 3. place game.

Top players of the tournament: Sindelar (Austria), Najedlý, Plánicka (Czechoslovakia), Conen (Germany), Meazza, Monti, Orsi (Italy), Zamora (Spain).

world cup 1930 history

Source: http://www.worldcup.isn.pl

Organizing the first World Cup championship was granted to Uruguay to honour its achievements in sports (two Olympic gold medals in football) and a centennial of this country's constitution, falling in 1930. Only 13 national teams declared a will to participate in the tournament (top European teams such as England, Scotland, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary didn't enter the competition), so there was no qualifiers.

The tournament was organized in two rounds: group games and play-offs. The participating teams were divided into 4 groups by geographical region. 5 teams were seeded: Uruguay (Olympic champion), Argentina (silver medallist), Brazil, USA and Bolivia. During the group games Yugoslavia did very well; so did USA and favourites from Uruguay and Argentina and these 4 teams made the semi-final. Just as expected, the favourite teams crushed their opponents (both games 6:1) and met in the final. For the players from Argentina this was supposed to be a kind of rematch for their loss with Uruguay in the Olympic final of 1928, but once again they were defeated. The first World Cup champion was the team from Uruguay. There was no 3. place game, since it was not in the regulations.
